Toothbrushes belong in your mouth and bathrooms, not the oceans. The problem? They can't be recycled with household waste because they need to be broken down by individual components. That’s why we collect all used toothbrushes after 3 months and recycle them in specialist plants. Here they are broken down into pellets and given a new lease of life.
Toothbrushes cannot be recycled with domestic waste. Less than 1% of all toothbrushes ever made have been recycled, which means they are now a typical feature in beach cleanups. With 4.7 billion manufactured every year, that's 94 million tonnes of plastic waste. The equivalent of 7000 London Red Buses
Toothbrushes require specialist recycling to separate the different materials. That’s why at Floe we subscribe to a circular model, aimed at eliminating waste. All we ask is that you send your used products back to us when your new box arrives so that they can be correctly recycled.
8% of the world's oil is used to make plastic, but we believe renewable alternatives are needed. Tubes for both our Dusk and Dawn toothpastes are made from sugarcane instead of petroleum. Unlike oil, sugarcane is grown all over the world meaning it supports a rural, agrarian economy. For every kg of sugarcane produced, 3kg of CO2 is removed from the air.
Bio-polymers aren’t new - they were first created by Victorian chemist Alexander Parkes in Hackney, 1856. Since then however we have depended almost completely on fossil fuels. It’s time for biopolymers to make a comeback.
There are many different types of dental floss, but typically it’s made from wax-coated nylon and is housed in a plastic case. Frankly, floss has little chance of being recycled, so it’s better to shop for biodegradable versions. Our floss is made from bamboo charcoal fibres, coated with candelilla wax and organic peppermint oil. To top it off, it comes in a reusable glass jar with a metal dispensing lid, allowing you to cut the floss itself… daily!
Our packaging is fully certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), who are dedicated to the promotion of responsible forest management worldwide. FSC defines standards based on agreed principles for responsible forest stewardship that are underpinned by environmental, social and economic principles.
We’re proud that all our products are designed to be returned for recycling. Learn more about why toothbrushes aren’t accepted by council recycling systems and how at Floe, we work to provide an alternative.
